Thomas Klestil (1932-2004)

Federal President from 1992 until 2004

Thomas Klestil was born in 1932 in Vienna. In 1957, he completed his studies at the College of World Trade (now the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration) with a “Doctorate in Commerce” and subsequently joined the Federal Chancellery. From 1959 to 1962, he was assigned to the Austrian delegation to the OECD in Paris, and from 1962 to 1966, he worked at the Austrian Embassy in Washington. In 1966, Dr. Thomas Klestil became Secretary to Federal Chancellor Josef Klaus (until 1969). In 1969, he was appointed Consul General in Los Angeles, then Ambassador to the UN in New York in 1978. In 1982, he became Ambassador to the US. From 1987 to 1992, he was the Secretary-General of the Austrian Foreign Ministry. In 1992, he was elected Federal President as the Austrian People’s Party candidate and was re-elected in 1998. Federal President Dr. Thomas Klestil died, two days before he had left office, on 6 July 2004.
