Rudolf Kirchschläger (1915-2000)

Federal President from 1974 bis 1986
Rudolf Kirchschläger was born in 1915 in Obermühl, Upper
Austria. After finishing grammar school, he studied law in
Vienna. Having recovered from
serious wounds sustained in the Second World War, he
worked as a district judge in
the postwar period.In 1956, he
joined the diplomatic service. He subsequently headed the
private offices of Foreign Ministers Kreisky and Toncic-Sorinj. From 1967 to 1970, Dr.Kirchschläger served as
Austrian Minister in Prague. A career diplomat without
party affiliations, he was chosen by Federal Chancellor
Kreisky to become Foreign Minister. On 23 June 1974,
the people of Austria
elected Kirchschläger to the presidency on the Socialist Party ticket. He was reelected on 18 May
1980. In conformity with the Constitution,
he retired on 8 July 1986 after his second term of
office. He died on the 30th of March 2000.
